Teaching Philosophy

Confidence, knowledge, understanding, discipline and practice are essential to performance.

Horses are beautiful, powerful, intelligent and sensitive creatures. Each has an individual personality, and like their riders, they understand and learn in different ways and at different rates. At Sinai, Helen believes, it is the recognition of this individuality of horse and rider as a combination which is essential to successful, correct and enjoyable training.

Every rider deserves a well balanced, responsive, relaxed horse whether they are competing or enjoying a hack.

Every horse deserves a quiet, balanced thinking rider to explain and encourage. The horse’s natural beauty is enhanced when horse and rider work together in harmony.

A rider’s knowledge and understanding is key to developing ability and confidence. There are so many aspects to riding, balance, leg, rein and seat aids, rhythm, half halts, turning and movements not to mention assessing where to go and how the horse is feeling. With so many points to consider every few seconds it is not surprising riders become frustrated and demoralised when things become difficult or when learning something new. A good teacher will break these points down and explain what, how and why systematically and in various ways so the rider can fully understand. This way the riders knows what is expected and how this might be achieved before an attempt is made. This does not mean it will be perfect first time, every time but it is an excellent way to achieve success through educated practice. This process should also mean that the rider understands enough to recreate the work at home which leads to improved enjoyable schooling and great results.

At Sinai, Helen encourages riders to recognise the importance of dressage or flatwork to all aspects of competitive riding. Helen, believes show jumping should be viewed as dressage with jumps, horses can only be expected to jump clear if the rider can control the rhythm, balance and power that is required for the sport. The same can be said of event horses as well as show horses which are also expected to be balanced and responsive for the judge.

Teaching Experience

Helen has been teaching all disciplines for over 12 years, with dressage a specialty and passion.

Helen began teaching at a young age by helping friends improve their performances at local shows; this quickly became a job and she became Head Girl and Instructor at a busy riding school and livery yard in Derbyshire. It was here that Helen developed her teaching style and regularly taught a wide variety of lessons from lead rein and adult beginners to show jumping, cross country and working hunter day courses and private dressage lessons towards local competitions.

From the riding school, teaching became freelance as Helen concentrated on competing her own horses.

Sinai was established in 2000 just before moving to South Wales. From here Sinai’s clientele has continued to grow with private clients qualifying for many regional and national unaffiliated show jumping and dressage championships, as well as the B.R.C and P.C National Dressage Championships. Specialised dressage clients regularly qualify for the British Dressage Area Festival Finals and Regional Championships, as well as representing Wales in senior and junior team competitions.

Helen regularly teaches Pony Clubs in Monmouthshire especially the Monmouthshire Hunt and Curre branches at rallies and camps. Helen feels it is very important to teach children correctly, developing their practical ability and confidence as well as educating them in the use of the aids and correct riding of movements through gentle repetition and lots of fun. Using these principles within the pony club the children acquire the knowledge and confidence to developed into leading competition riders of the future.

"I have Helen to thank for the continuous training and support in maintaining her physical well being"

Photo's below from Midland Regional championships.

"Following a muscular injury and having missed the Trailblazers National Finals we were not sure if she would be ready to go as our preparation was on a day to day basis. I was thrilled to get there and despite everything she felt great and was more mature and relaxed in her attitude than previous competitions. Having Helens support in the lead up to, and on the day was invaluable and proves that even challenging horses can come good with the correct training and support. Fingers crossed for next year!"

Wentward Amadeus (Jack)Cezare (Cez)

Helen’s trained me over a period of about 6 years with 3 different horses: Wentward Amadeus (Jack), Cezare (Cez) and Millers Spark (Sparks).

Training with Helen was a welcome change from the string of trainers I’d had that weren’t that knowledgeable about dressage at all.  While jumping was thrilling at home, it wasn’t something that I was keen to compete in, and showing was rapidly becoming boring, uneventful and frustrating.

Before Helen, I was getting what I thought were passable scores (60% was a figure that was dreamt about, not the minimum benchmark!) at various shows and I hadn’t ventured to a pure dressage event yet.

Helen became more than just a trainer for me – she was a friend in the arena giving me guidance and teaching me without the jargon and patronizing comments I’d had from previous trainers.  She helped find a fantastic home for my faithful part-bred Arab pony, Jack, and continued training me with the impossible task of taking a pure-bred Arabian into the dressage circuit.

Cezare and I must have been the bane of her life as we desperately fought disheartening and unfair comments and mediocre scores from prejudicial judges but we battled on nevertheless until somehow we managed to qualify for the  BD Area Festival,  where we didn’t qualify further but did well in both Novice and Prelim.

I was rapidly outgrowing Cez – in both height and in dressage.  I was ready to go further with the sport, but Cez, although capable, wasn’t the taste of many judges on the circuit.  So, with Helen’s help, we found Millers Spark, a Thoroughbred X Cleveland Bay who had potential but needed a lot of work.

After year of training and handling under Helen’s guidance to correct his issues, Sparks became a superstar.  We qualified for and went to the BRC Championships twice, with the team winning the Junior Dressage Championship, and also went to the BRC Dressage to Music Championships. Our crowning achievements include a Novice 38 test at Burrows Court where we scored 72.8% and a high of 67.2% in Elementary 41 at Exeter EC (our final competition before we sold Sparks (with Helen’s help!) because of my move to University).

I’d recommend Helen to anyone who loves their horse and loves to ride with the horse rather than just on it.  Helen’s training will help improve the connection between you and your horse, opening up more opportunities easily.
